The Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) feepayment is a mandatory step in your F-1 visa application process that many Nepali students find confusing. Understanding how to pay this fee correctly from Nepal, when to pay it and how to avoid common mistakes ensures your visa application stays on track without unnecessary delays.
The SEVIS fee funds the database that tracks international students studying in the United States. Every F-1 visa applicant must pay this fee before their visa interview at the U.S. Embassy in Kathmandu.
The current SEVIS I-901 fee is US$350 for F-1 students. This amount is set by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and applies uniformly regardless of where you’re applying from. The fee is separate from your visa application fee and must be paid to a different system.
You become eligible to pay the SEVIS fee once you receive your Form I-20 from your university. The I-20 contains your SEVIS ID number, which you’ll need to complete the payment. Don’t attempt to pay before receiving your I-20, as you won’t have the required information to process the payment correctly.
Timing your SEVIS fee payment correctly prevents delays in your visa application process and ensures you meet all U.S. student visa requirements efficiently.
You can pay the SEVIS fee as soon as you receive your I-20, but you must pay at least three business days before your scheduled visa interview. This processing window allows the payment to clear and appear in the system when consular officers review your application. Paying earlier than this minimum provides a safety buffer in case of any payment processing issues.
The payment confirmation receipt remains valid indefinitely as long as your SEVIS record stays active. If you need to reschedule your visa interview, or if your interview gets delayed, you don’t need to pay again. However, if you receive a new I-20 with a different SEVIS ID number because you’re changing schools or programs, you’ll need to make a new SEVIS fee payment.
After paying, you can access and print your payment confirmation receipt from the SEVIS fee website. Print multiple copies of this receipt. You’ll need one for your visa interview, and you should keep additional copies for your records and to carry when traveling to the United States.
The official SEVIS fee payment website accepts several payment methods that work for applicants in Nepal. Understanding which options function reliably from Nepal helps you choose the best approach for your situation.
International credit cards and debit cards represent the fastest and most commonly used payment method for Nepali students. Cards with Visa, Mastercard or American Express networks generally process successfully through the SEVIS payment system.
Before attempting payment, verify that your card has international transaction capability enabled. Many Nepali banks restrict international online transactions by default for security purposes. Contact your bank to enable international transactions if necessary, and ensure your card has sufficient available credit or balance to cover the US$350 fee, plus any foreign transaction fees your bank charges.
The SEVIS payment website processes transactions in U.S. dollars. Your Nepali bank will convert the amount using their exchange rate on the transaction date. Some banks charge foreign transaction fees of 2%-4% on top of the base amount, so factor these additional costs into your budget.
The SEVIS system also accepts payments through Western Union’s Quick Pay service. This option can work well if you encounter difficulties with credit card payments or prefer not to use your card for international online transactions.
To use Western Union, visit the SEVIS fee website, select the Western Union payment option and follow the instructions to generate a payment reference number. Then visit a Western Union agent location in Nepal with cash, your passport and the reference number. Western Union has multiple agent locations across Kathmandu and other Nepali cities.
Western Union charges service fees for this transaction in addition to the SEVIS fee itself. These fees vary but typically add several dollars to your total cost. Ask about the complete fee structure before completing the transaction.
While the SEVIS system technically accepts check and money order payments, this method is impractical for Nepali applicants due to long processing times and complexity of sending international payments. The electronic payment methods described above work much more efficiently for students applying from Nepal.
Understanding the exact payment process helps you avoid errors that could delay your visa application or require repayment.
Access the official SEVIS I-901 fee website by searching for “SEVIS fee payment” or visiting the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement website’s SEVIS section. Be cautious of unofficial websites that may charge additional fees or mishandle your information. The official government website has a .gov domain.
Select “Pay I-901 Fee” from the website menu and carefully enter your information exactly as it appears on your Form I-20. Your SEVIS ID number is critical – double-check that you’ve entered it correctly before proceeding. Even a single digit error will cause problems with your payment.
Enter your personal information including full name, date of birth and address exactly matching your I-20 and passport. Inconsistencies between documents can create complications during visa processing. For address information, you can use your current Nepali address.
Select your payment method and complete the required payment information. For credit card payments, enter your card details carefully and verify all information before submitting. The payment processes immediately, and you’ll receive confirmation once it’s successful.
After successful payment, the system generates your payment receipt. Save this receipt digitally and print multiple physical copies. Keep the digital version in your email and cloud storage for easy access if needed. File physical copies with your other visa documents.
Several errors commonly occur during SEVIS fee payment from Nepal. Awareness of these mistakes helps you complete the process correctly the first time.
Incorrect SEVIS ID entry represents the most frequent error. Students misread their I-20, transpose numbers or enter extra digits. Always double-check your SEVIS ID against your I-20 before submitting payment. If you pay with an incorrect SEVIS ID, you may need to pay again and go through a refund request process for the incorrect payment.
Name mismatches between your payment, I-20 and passport create problems. Enter your name exactly as it appears on your I-20 and passport. If your name includes middle names or multiple parts, ensure they’re entered in the correct fields and format.
Paying too late causes interview scheduling problems. Some students wait until just before their interview to pay the SEVIS fee, only to find that payment processing delays prevent them from attending their scheduled interview. Pay at least one week before your interview to ensure adequate processing time and avoid last-minute complications.
Not saving payment confirmation leaves you without proof of payment. The SEVIS website allows you to reprint receipts, but having your original confirmation saved prevents stress if you need to access it quickly. Email the receipt to yourself immediately after paying and save the PDF to multiple locations.
Beyond visa fees and application costs, many Nepali students face challenges funding their education in the United States. Traditional education loans in Nepal often require significant collateral or family guarantors that limit access for many qualified students.
MPOWER Financing provides international student loans without cosigner or collateral requirements, evaluating students based on their academic achievements and future career potential instead of current family wealth. This approach has helped thousands of international students access education at over 500 universities across the United States and Canada.
MPOWER specifically serves students from countries like Nepal where traditional lending options create barriers for talented students from middle-class families. Loan amounts from US$2,001 up to US$100,000 provide flexibility for various program costs and educational needs.
MPOWER’s digital application process delivers faster decisions than traditional Nepali banks, which is particularly valuable when you’re coordinating multiple aspects of moving to the United States as a Nepali student. The streamlined approach eliminates repeated branch visits while still providing thorough evaluation of your application.
The company also provides resources for visa preparation, financial planning and career development to support international students throughout their educational journey. This comprehensive approach recognizes that successfully studying abroad involves more than just tuition funding – it requires understanding complex systems, managing finances in a new country and planning for career success after graduation.
Once you’ve successfully paid your SEVIS fee, verify that your payment appears in the system. You can check payment status on the SEVIS fee website using your SEVIS ID number. The system typically updates within 24 to 48 hours, though it can take up to three business days.
Include your SEVIS fee receipt with your visa interview documents. Consular officers will verify that you’ve paid this fee as part of reviewing your application. Having the receipt readily accessible in your document folder speeds the interview process.
Keep your receipt after receiving your visa. You may need to present it when entering the United States for the first time. Immigration officers at your port of entry sometimes request to see SEVIS fee payment confirmation as part of verifying your student status.
