Understanding SEVIS fees and how to pay them as an Indian student

The Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) I-901 fee represents a mandatory payment for F-1 visa applicants studying overseas in the U.S. This fee funds the database that tracks international students and ensures they maintain proper status throughout their programs. Understanding what this fee covers, when to pay it and how the payment process works helps you avoid common mistakes that delay visa processing.

What the SEVIS fee is and why you pay it

The SEVIS system serves as the backbone of international student tracking in the United States, and your fee payment supports this infrastructure.

Purpose of SEVIS

Database maintenance – SEVIS tracks all F-1 and M-1 students in the U.S., recording your school enrollment, address changes, program extensions and employment authorization.

Immigration compliance – The system helps U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) monitor whether students maintain their visa status and follow regulations.

Security measures – SEVIS provides real-time data to customs and border protection officers when you enter or leave the United States.

Who must pay the fee

You must pay the I-901 SEVIS fee (US$350) if you are:

  • Applying for an initial F-1 visa using a new SEVIS ID
  • Changing status to F-1 inside the United States
  • Reinstating F-1 status after being out of status more than five months (or otherwise required by your DSO/USCIS)

You generally do not pay again if you are:

  • An F-2 dependent (spouse/child) applying for an F-2 visa
  • Transferring schools or changing programs while keeping the same SEVIS ID and maintaining status
  • Extending your program at the same school or applying for OPT
  • Reapplying after a visa denial within 12 months for the same status (same SEVIS ID)

Note: If you leave the U.S. and are issued a new SEVIS ID (for example, after a long absence), you’ll need to pay again on the new record. Fee transfers between SEVIS IDs are possible in limited cases via DHS’s process.

Payment methods and procedures

There are three official ways to pay the I-901 SEVIS fee. For most students, online payment at FMJfee.com is fastest and simplest.

Online payment (recommended)

  • Go to FMJfee.com → Pay I-901 fee and complete Form I-901 using your I-20.
  • Match your name to the I-20 exactly; enter your SEVIS ID (N00XXXXXXXXX) and school code as shown on your I-20.
  • Pay with Visa, MasterCard or American Express; print or save the receipt immediately.

Processing time: Allow up to three business days for full system posting; consular officers verify payment electronically.

Alternative official options (use only if you cannot pay online):

  • Western Union Quick Pay (follow the instructions linked from FMJfee.com; adds complexity and extra lead time).
  • Mail-in check or money order drawn on a U.S. bank (slowest; allow extra time).

Only use the official siteFMJfee.com; avoid third-party “payment” sites.

Critical timing and receipt requirements

Proper timing of your SEVIS fee payment prevents visa application delays and ensures smooth processing at multiple checkpoints.

When to pay

  • Pay as soon as you receive your I-20.
  • Ensure payment posts at least ~three business days before your interview so it appears in consular systems.

Why timing matters:

Consular officers verify your SEVIS fee payment electronically during your visa interview. If the payment hasn’t been processed (which takes up to three business days), your interview may be delayed or rescheduled.

Receipt requirements

Keep a printed or saved I-901 confirmation; consular/port-of-entry officers verify electronically, but having the receipt speeds resolution if systems lag.

What if you lose your receipt?

Use FMJfee.com → Check I-901 Status to reprint using your SEVIS ID, last name and date of birth.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Understanding frequent errors helps you navigate the payment process smoothly.

Name spelling errors

The problem: Your name on Form I-901 doesn’t match your I-20 exactly. Even small differences cause processing delays.

How to avoid it:

  • Have your I-20 in front of you while completing the form.
  • Double-check spelling before submitting payment.
  • If you notice an error after payment, email FMJfee.sevis@ice.dhs.gov immediately with correction requests.

Wrong SEVIS ID or school code

The problem: Entering incorrect SEVIS identification numbers or school codes. This prevents proper payment processing.

How to avoid it:

  • Verify your SEVIS ID appears in format N00XXXXXXXXX on your I-20.
  • Confirm your school code matches exactly what appears on your I-20.
  • Don’t rely on memory – reference your actual I-20 document.

Paying too late

The problem: Paying just before your visa interview. This doesn’t allow processing time.

How to avoid it:

  • Pay as soon as you receive your I-20.
  • Plan for the three-business-day processing window.
  • Account for potential technical issues or payment problems.

Using unauthorized websites

The problem: Using a scam website to process your SEVIS payment. These sites steal your money and personal information.

How to avoid it:

  • Only use the official website: FMJfee.com
  • Verify the URL before entering payment information.
  • Be suspicious of sites charging extra “processing fees.”
