Schedule your visa and biometrics appointments

It’s best to apply for your visa as soon as you have all your documents ready to go. This will ensure you have your approval before your journey – even if you need to schedule a second round. As a side note, you’ll know your visa decision outcome the same day as your visa appointment!

You’re allowed one expedited visa interview, but only if your expected departure date is within 30 days. You should schedule a visa interview for the first available time and monitor for new openings.

Guide on how to schedule an expedited visa appointment within 30 days of your program start date. Here’s how

If your closest U.S. consulate has a long wait time, investigate other locations – even if they’re in other countries. It’s always best to apply in your home country, but if you must apply abroad because of long wait times, choose an embassy or consulate with a large number of visa applicants that’s familiar with applicants coming from your country.

Denials happen – get on the calendar for the next available time. Take this as an opportunity to learn and strengthen your visa application. Most universities allow for an admissions deferral, as does MPOWER. You can defer your student loan by one semester. If you’ve been refused, you need to figure out why and change your strategy for your next interview.  Don’t apply again with the same strategy expecting a different outcome.

Documents to bring

On your visa appointment day, bring all necessary personal and financial documents:

  • Your passport

  • Your completed Visa application form(s)

  • Your MPOWER visa support letter: A letter of financial support was previously emailed to you as evidence of funding.

  • Your MPOWER loan offer. In addition to your visa support letter, you can bring your MPOWER Financing student loan approval and loan documents as additional evidence of MPOWER’s funding support for your program.

  • Your I-20 from University. You can submit your I-20 as evidence of your enrollment. The I-20 is also called a “Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status.”

  • Proof of any additional funding sources. These include financial aid, sponsorships, savings or scholarships. You should also bring evidence of any financial support you’ll receive from your family. The more financial backing you can show, the better. These supporting documents should clearly state the amount and the source’s relationship to you or your family.

  • (Optional) Admission letter to your University. You can bring this as additional evidence of your enrollment. You should also bring any other admission letters from other universities you were admitted to.
