La Unidad Latina
MPOWERing DACA Students Scholarship

We’re thrilled to partner with La Unidad Latina Foundation (LULF) on this exciting new scholarship program for DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) students with high potential as a leader and advocate for the DACA community.

The MPOWER-LULF partnership grew out of a shared passion for supporting high-potential international and DACA students (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) and expanding access to higher education.

The emphasis on DACA students reflects MPOWER and LULF’s engagement with this underserved population. MPOWER has made loans to DACA students at more than a dozen U.S. universities and wants to increase its outreach to this community. “DACA students face a lot of hurdles,” Smadja said. “They’re not eligible for federally-subsidized loans, and their parents typically have limited access to a bank loan because they lack the credit history or income to qualify. We’ve assisted DACA students through our core lending product, which does not require collateral or a co-signer, and we also include them in our existing Global Citizen Scholarship Program, but we wanted to create a unique scholarship program just for them in partnership with LULF.”

LULF has awarded scholarships irrespective of immigration status since its inception. Yet in 2015, LULF decided to permanently designate a scholarship for DACA students to support their fight for higher education and their place in America, their home. Since that time, LULF has awarded over $20,000 in scholarships to DACA students and hopes to significantly increase that number through this partnership.

  • The applicant’s proven engagement and effectiveness in creating opportunity, improving quality of life, and/or advocating for and empowering marginalized communities in his or her home country and/or within the U.S. Latino community;

A panel of representatives from LULF (the “Judges”) will review all applicable and valid Entries and select ten finalist submissions from among them. A joint LULF-MPOWER committee (also “Judges”) will then recommend winners to MPOWER’s CEO for final selection. MPOWER and LULF reserve the right to conduct interviews and/or request any additional information from any Entrants related to their Entry prior to decision. At a minimum, all selected winners will be required to provide a transcript and proof of citizenship and immigration status to verify that all eligibility requirements are met. All decisions (including but not limited to eligibility determinations) will be final and binding and are not subject to challenge or appeal. Prize awards are subject to Sponsor’s verification of winners’ eligibility. All winners will be required to submit (without alteration and in the form provided by Sponsors) a completed and signed Affidavit of Eligibility and Liability & Publicity Release (the “Release”). Winner’s failure to timely return an executed Release within the required time period to Sponsors will void a winner’s Prize award and Sponsors reserve the right to award such Prize to an alternate entrant. Winners are solely responsible for the payment of any applicable federal, state, and local taxes associated with their acceptance and receipt of any Prize. Winners acknowledge that their Prize may be subject to U.S. withholding and that they may be required to execute and return to Sponsor the U.S. Department of the Treasury Internal Revenue Service Form W-9.

All winners will be notified by telephone, email, and/or regular mail using contact information provided on their Entry. Sponsor shall have no liability for any winner notification that is lost, intercepted, or not received by the potential winner for any reason. If any potential winner does not respond within the time required by Sponsor, or if any winner notification is returned as unclaimed or undeliverable to a potential winner, or fails to timely return the Release to Sponsor, the Prize for that Contest will be awarded to an alternate winner selected by the Judges based on the results of the aforementioned judging criteria.

Following Sponsor’s verification of winner’s eligibility and receipt of the executed Release from a winner, Sponsor shall pay the Prize on winner’s behalf, directly to winner’s school of enrollment. Sponsor will not have any liability to winner in the event that winner’s school refuses, loses, fails to properly apply, or otherwise fails to credit any Prize (or portion thereof) for winner’s benefit.

8. Right to Modify or Cancel. The invalidity or unenforceability of any provision of these Terms and Conditions will not affect the validity or enforceability of any other provision. In the event any provision is found invalid or unenforceable, these Terms and Conditions will otherwise remain in effect in accordance with their terms as if the invalid or unenforceable provision was never included. The Sponsors’ failure to enforce any term of these Terms and Conditions does not constitute a waiver of that provision. The Sponsors may cancel, suspend, and/or modify a Contest or any part of it, in any way, if the Sponsors determine in their sole discretion that a Contest is not capable of executing as the Sponsors intended, or that any mistake, clerical, or typographical error, omission, fraud, technical failure, tampering, computer virus, or other factors, technical or otherwise, beyond the Sponsors’ reasonable control, impairs or may impair the Sponsors’ ability to properly conduct the Contest, subject to any applicable law or regulation.

9. Personal Information. Information collected from Entrants in connection with a Contest is subject to the Sponsor’s Privacy Policy.

10. List of Winners. The list of winners will be available to view on the MPOWER and LULF’s website, and in any press releases or other media announcements regarding the Contest.
