F-1 visa holders do not automatically receive a Social Security number (SSN) upon arrival in the U.S. But if you plan to work, receive taxable income or apply for certain financial services, you may need one. A social security card for F-1 students is only available under specific conditions and is not required for all students.

Bring original documents and a completed SS-5 form, which is the official Social Security card application. There is no cost to apply.
It typically takes seven to 14 business days to receive your SSN in the mail after the SSA approves your application.

Students receiving scholarships, grants or other taxable funding may need to file even if they do not earn wages. Learning the basics of international students and taxes helps you stay compliant and avoid penalties.
