The most common student visa for academic programs is the F-1 visa. It’s used by international students enrolled in full-time programs at accredited U.S. universities. If you’re attending a vocational or non-academic program, you may need an M-1 visa instead.

To qualify for an F-1 visa, you’ll need:

  • An acceptance letter from a U.S. university approved by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) which certifies university programs as legitimate
  • Proof of enough financial support to cover tuition and living expenses
  • A completed DS-160 U.S. visa application form
  • A valid passport

The application process may vary slightly depending on your country, but it generally includes the following steps:

1. Obtain your I-20 formAfter you’re accepted, your university will issue Form I-20. This document confirms your enrollment and includes details about your program, start date and funding.

2. Submit your DS-160 formThe DS-160 U.S. visa form is the online application for a U.S. visa. Be sure all information is correct and matches the details on your I-20 and passport.

3. Pay the SEVIS and visa feesYou’ll need to pay the SEVIS I-901 fee and the visa application fee. Keep your payment receipts to show during your interview.

4. Schedule and attend your visa interviewYour interview will take place at a U.S. embassy or consulate. The officer will ask questions about your academic goals, financial situation and future plans. Use our F-1 visa interview preparation tips to feel more confident.

5. Complete your medical examination if requiredSome countries require a medical examination for student visa applicants. Your embassy or consulate will tell you if this applies to you and provide approved clinics or doctors.

What to expect after your visa approval

Once approved, the visa will be stamped in your passport. You can travel to the U.S. up to 30 days before your program start date. Recent rules require that you enter the U.S. within 90 days of your visa date.  Make sure to keep all important documents with you, including your I-20, financial records and university acceptance letter.

When you arrive, a Customs and Border Protection officer will review your documents and admit you into the U.S. as an F-1 student. You’ll receive an I-94 record as proof of entry.

From there, you can focus on settling in, meeting classmates and starting your studies. You’ll also want to stay familiar with F-1 visa requirements so you remain in legal status throughout your program.
