The post-graduation work permit (PGWP) lets international students stay in Canada and work after finishing their studies. But not every student qualifies. To get a PGWP, you’ll need to meet a specific set of eligibility rules tied to your program, institution and study permit status.
This article walks through what makes you eligible, what can disqualify you and how to make smart choices about schools and programs if you want to work in Canada after graduation.
What is PGWP and why does eligibility matter?
The PGWP Canada is an open work permit that gives recent graduates up to three years of unrestricted work rights. You don’t need a job offer to apply. You can work for any employer in almost any field.
This permit can help you:
But the PGWP is not automatic. You’ll need to meet the eligibility criteria, apply on time and ensure your school and program qualify under Canada student visa requirements.

Who is eligible for a PGWP?
To qualify for the PGWP, you must meet PGWP Canada eligibility standards set by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). These include:
Your school must be on the official DLI list at the time you study and issue your final transcript.
Your program must be at least eight months long and lead to a degree, diploma or certificate. The longer your program, the longer your PGWP.
You must have studied full time for the entire program. Exceptions may apply for your final term or approved leave.
You must hold a study permit Canada issued by IRCC and apply for the PGWP within 180 days of getting your final transcript or graduation letter.
While Canada allowed temporary flexibility for online learning during the pandemic, current rules require most instruction to be in person for PGWP eligibility.
Not all programs or institutions are eligible. For example, some private career colleges do not qualify, even if they are listed as DLIs. When comparing Canadian colleges for international students, always verify their PGWP status.
How long is the PGWP valid?
The length of your PGWP depends on how long your study program was:
For example, if you pursue a master’s abroad in Canada that lasts 18 months, you may get a work permit valid for up to that duration. If your program is two years or longer, you’ll likely qualify for the full three-year permit.
Your PGWP is a once-in-a-lifetime benefit at each education level. You cannot extend it or apply again unless you complete another qualifying program at a higher level.
