Who is eligible for a PGWP?

To qualify for the PGWP, you must meet PGWP Canada eligibility standards set by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). These include:

  • Graduating from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)

Your school must be on the official DLI list at the time you study and issue your final transcript.

  • Completing a qualifying program

Your program must be at least eight months long and lead to a degree, diploma or certificate. The longer your program, the longer your PGWP.

  • Full-time enrollment

You must have studied full time for the entire program. Exceptions may apply for your final term or approved leave.

  • Valid study permit during your program

You must hold a study permit Canada issued by IRCC and apply for the PGWP within 180 days of getting your final transcript or graduation letter.

  • In-person learning

While Canada allowed temporary flexibility for online learning during the pandemic, current rules require most instruction to be in person for PGWP eligibility.

Not all programs or institutions are eligible. For example, some private career colleges do not qualify, even if they are listed as DLIs. When comparing Canadian colleges for international students, always verify their PGWP status.

How long is the PGWP valid?

The length of your PGWP depends on how long your study program was:

  • Programs between eight months and two years = PGWP valid for same length
  • Programs of two years or longer = PGWP valid for three years
  • Two eligible programs completed back to back = may combine for longer validity

For example, if you pursue a master’s abroad in Canada that lasts 18 months, you may get a work permit valid for up to that duration. If your program is two years or longer, you’ll likely qualify for the full three-year permit.

Your PGWP is a once-in-a-lifetime benefit at each education level. You cannot extend it or apply again unless you complete another qualifying program at a higher level.
