PGWP Canada: How to stay and work after graduation

Graduating from a Canadian university is a major achievement and it is also the start of your next chapter in Canada. The post-graduation work permit (PGWP) allows eligible international students to stay and work in Canada for up to three years after finishing their studies.

This page explains how the PGWP Canada program works, who qualifies and how to apply. If you’re planning to study in Canada and want the option to gain work experience after graduation, this is a program you need to understand.

What is the PGWP?

The PGWP, or post-graduation work permit, is an open work permit offered by the Canadian government. It allows international graduates from eligible programs to work for any employer in Canada in any field without needing a job offer first.

A PGWP can be valid for up to three years, depending on the length of your study program. This makes it a valuable bridge between graduation and permanent residency for many students.

To apply, you must have a valid study permit Canada issued during your program and apply within 180 days of receiving your final transcript or graduation confirmation.

Unlike employer-specific work permits, the PGWP gives you flexibility to:

  • Try different roles and industries
  • Gain Canadian work experience for future immigration programs
  • Build a professional network and long-term career prospects

Who is eligible for PGWP Canada?

Not all graduates automatically qualify for the PGWP. You must meet several PGWP Canada eligibility rules to apply successfully. Here’s what you need:

  • Graduation from a designated learning institution (DLI)

Your school must appear on the list of approved universities (DLIs) at the time of your study.

  • A program that is at least eight months long

Programs shorter than eight months are not eligible.

  • Full-time enrollment for the entire program

You must have studied full time with exceptions only for final terms or approved leaves.

  • A valid study permit at the time of your application

You must apply within 180 days of completing your program, and your permit must have been valid at some point during that period.

The PGWP is often used by students earning a master’s abroad in Canada or those attending Canadian universities for international students that meet DLI standards. Always check with your school to confirm whether your program qualifies.

How to apply for the PGWP

You can apply for the PGWP online through the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website. Here’s what the process involves:

1. Gather your documents

You’ll need:

  • A copy of your passport
  • An official letter from your school confirming program completion
  • A final transcript
  • Your valid study permit

2. Apply online

Submit your application through the IRCC portal. Make sure your information matches your previous study permit and Canada student visa records.

3. Pay the fee and wait for processing

The PGWP fee is currently CA$255. Processing times can vary depending on your location and volume of applications.

4. Start working

If you apply while your study permit is still valid, you may be allowed to start working full time while waiting for approval. Check IRCC guidelines to confirm this applies to your situation.

Having a PGWP helps you gain real-world experience in Canada and can be a critical step if you’re considering permanent residency through pathways like Canadian Experience Class.
