  • Graduation from a designated learning institution (DLI)

 Your school must appear on the list of approved universities (DLIs) at the time of your study.

  • A program that is at least eight months long

Programs shorter than eight months are not eligible.

  • Full-time enrollment for the entire program

You must have studied full time with exceptions only for final terms or approved leaves.

  • A valid study permit at the time of your application

You must apply within 180 days of completing your program, and your permit must have been valid at some point during that period.

The PGWP is often used by students earning a master’s abroad in Canada or those attending Canadian universities for international students that meet DLI standards. Always check with your school to confirm whether your program qualifies.

How to apply for the PGWP

You can apply for the PGWP online through the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website. Here’s what the process involves:

1. Gather your documents

You’ll need:

  • A copy of your passport
  • An official letter from your school confirming program completion
  • A final transcript
  • Your valid study permit

2. Apply online

Submit your application through the IRCC portal. Make sure your information matches your previous study permit and Canada student visa records.

3. Pay the fee and wait for processing

The PGWP fee is currently CA$255. Processing times can vary depending on your location and volume of applications.

4. Start working

If you apply while your study permit is still valid, you may be allowed to start working full time while waiting for approval. Check IRCC guidelines to confirm this applies to your situation.
