Student permit Canada

If you want to study overseas in Canada as an international student, you’ll need a study permit. This document gives you legal permission to attend school in Canada, stay in the country for the duration of your program and work part time while enrolled.

Applying for a student permit in Canada involves more than just submitting a form. You’ll need to meet specific eligibility rules, show financial proof and follow immigration steps closely. This article walks you through the basics of getting a student permit, from what it is to how to apply.

What is a Canadian student permit and who needs one?

A student permit that Canada issues to international students is not the same as a visa. It’s a study document that allows you to live and study in Canada full time. You’ll still need a temporary resident visa or an electronic travel authorization (eTA) to enter the country, but your student permit is what legally lets you stay.

You’ll need a student permit if:

  • You are enrolled in a university program longer than six months.
  • You are not a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
  • You are studying at an approved university, also known as a designated learning institution (DLI).

Students in short-term programs (under six months) may not need a permit, but applying in advance is still recommended in case your plans change. A valid permit also makes you eligible to work during school and apply for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP) Canada eligibility after graduation.

Requirements to apply for a student permit

Before you start your application, you’ll need to gather documents that prove you meet the requirements. Here’s what most applicants will need:

  • Letter of acceptance from an approved university, also known as a DLI
  • Proof of identity, including a valid passport and passport-sized photos
  • Proof of funds for student visa, showing you can pay tuition and living expenses
  • A letter of explanation, outlining why you want to study in Canada
  • Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) if you’re attending a school in Quebec
  • Medical examination for student visa, if required by your country of residence
  • Police clearance, if requested

Your proof of funds should show that you have at least CA$20,635 for a two year program for living expenses, plus tuition and travel costs. This can include savings, student loans, scholarships or a combination of sources.

How to apply for a Canada student permit

The application process can take several months, so it’s important to start early. Most students apply online through the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website, but you may also be able to apply through a visa application center.

Here’s what the process usually looks like:

1. Get your documents ready

Have your acceptance letter, financial proof and any country-specific documents prepared.

2. Complete your online application

Fill out the application form, upload documents and pay the fee. Most applications also require biometrics (fingerprints and a photo).

3. Take your medical exam if required

A medical examination for student visa applicants is mandatory for students from certain countries or if your program involves health care, child care or other high-contact roles.

4. Wait for your decision

If approved, you’ll receive a Port of Entry (POE) Letter of Introduction. When you arrive in Canada, present this letter and your documents to receive your official study permit.

5. Begin your studies and follow permit rules

Once your permit is active, you must remain enrolled, make progress in your program and follow all terms, including limits on employment hours.

A student permit authorizes you to study in Canada, while a visa or eTA  lets you enter the country. You need both to attend school if you’re coming from abroad.

What’s required to get a student permit?

You’ll need an acceptance letter from an approved university (DLI), a valid passport, proof of funds and sometimes a medical exam or police certificate depending on your background.

Do I need to show a bank statement for my study permit?

Yes. You need to show you can afford tuition, living costs and return travel. This can be through bank funds, a loan from MPOWER or a scholarship.

Can I work while holding a student permit?

Yes. Most students can work up to 24 hours per week during school and full time during breaks. Your study permit must include this condition.

Does a student permit make me eligible for a PGWP?

It can, but only if your program and school qualify. Check the rules for PGWP Canada eligibility to make sure your program applies.
